What’s in a Name?
Juliet may have dismissed Romeo’s last name as inconsequential in Romeo and Juliet, but names carry weight - long before a single drink is had.
It’s a question we’re often asked: why Apotheca?
For us, it wasn’t merely about the quiet elegance of Latin, where apotheca refers to a storehouse for herbs, spices, and wine. It was a deliberate nod to old-world apothecaries - the forerunners of modern-day pharmacists.
Long before cocktails as we know them existed, apothecaries transformed garden ingredients - herbs, roots, flowers, spices, bark - into medicines. There was care in that process. Precision. Chemistry. A deep understanding of how elements interact and evolve.
That spirit of transformation is at the heart of what we do at Apotheca Mixology, a mobile bar in Lagos offering a refined cocktail experience. Over time, many early herbal preparations made their way into cocktails. Amari, like Campari, remain a staple today.
At Apotheca Mixology, we embrace this lineage not as nostalgia, but as a foundation. It informs our approach to botanical mixology, where tropical and indigenous botanicals are never just decorative, but the very core of each drink.
Why Botanical Mixology?
Our work is rooted in a deep fascination with the botanical heritage of Africa and the tropics.
For us, there is no better way to express the nuance and vibrancy of our terroir than through modern cocktail craft - translated into something you can experience in a glass.
We draw from this heritage with intention, working with ingredients that carry both flavour and story. Some are familiar, others less so, but each is selected with the greatest care.
This often calls for a slower, more considered approach - from how ingredients are grown and sourced, to the techniques used to shape them. Whether extracting through maceration or refining texture through clarification, each step is designed to build drinks that feel grounded in place while taking the palate somewhere new.
The result is something layered, expressive, elegant - yet undeniably complex.
More Than a Name
So the next time you wonder, Apotheca is not simply a reference.
It is a philosophy.
A way of crafting.
An approach to experience.
Because ultimately, what’s in a name is not just what it means - but what it invites you to discover.
